5G’s Unfulfilled Promise: Is the Hype Real?

Airtel India’s Vice Chairman recently voiced concerns that 5G hasn’t lived up to the initial hype, echoing sentiments felt across the telecom industry. While offering faster speeds, the consumer-facing benefits have been limited, primarily focusing on enhanced download and streaming experiences. This raises questions about whether the substantial investments in 5G infrastructure are truly yielding the expected returns for both providers and consumers.

The core issue lies in the lack of groundbreaking applications that leverage 5G’s advanced capabilities beyond speed. Telecom companies can deliver data more efficiently, reducing costs per bit. However, this efficiency hasn’t translated into innovative services or substantial revenue growth. The anticipated revolution in areas like IoT and augmented reality remains largely unrealized, leaving a gap between expectation and reality.
