Starting September, Google will shift its roughly 90‑person AI responsibility team from Google DeepMind into the company’s Global Affairs organization, which handles policy and lobbying. The move is part of a larger re‑organisation that draws DeepMind more tightly into central Google.
Some staff expressed concern that the transition could limit access to DeepMind’s Gemini researchers, potentially weakening safety efforts. Team lead Helen King told employees in an internal email that access and resources will stay intact, emphasizing that the re‑structure is not a reduction in capability.
Integrating the team under Global Affairs aims to align AI safety work with broader policy outreach, but it also raises questions about future independence. King’s message stressed that the unit will continue to focus on ethical guidelines, safety testing and responsible AI development across Google.
