Missing AI Rules Across New York School Districts

We attempted to collect AI policies from every New York school district and found a striking void. New York Focus, a nonprofit investigative outlet, contacted 750 districts and charters. Fewer than a dozen provided documented guidelines, leaving most schools without formal AI guidance. This absence of transparency raises concerns about how students use emerging tech daily. The findings reveal a pressing governance gap that could affect student safety and equity.

Without clear rules, schools risk exposing children to biased algorithms, compromising privacy, or deepening divides. Some districts have drafted policies focusing on data protection and equitable access, while others rely on informal teacher judgment. This fragmented approach makes accountability difficult for parents, educators, and lawmakers.

Lawmakers are debating a framework that would set expectations for privacy, transparency, and fairness. Until such standards exist, districts must draft clear, student‑centered policies to protect learning in an AI‑driven world.
